Lighting Science® Announces New Rhode Island Headquarters

Transforming Rhode Island with the Science of Light

Lighting Science, one of the country’s leading LED technology companies, joined Governor Gina Raimondo on Monday to announce the opening of its new executive headquarters in the Providence, Rhode Island area. The company, which has been based in Melbourne, Florida for the past 8 years, is relocating its executive team after an exhaustive search for a new home that offers access to a highly-educated, tech-savvy work force with close proximity to large regional markets. Rhode Island, under the direction of Governor Raimondo, has proven to be a highly progressive environment for technology companies, offering a network of passionate business leaders, world-class institutions, and supportive state politicians to assist in growing a dynamic company.

“Lighting Science has found a new home, one where it can leverage local talent and infrastructure to significantly expand its business and take advantage of the progressive CEOs and decision makers who are looking for forward-leaning solutions to create healthier, safer and more productive environments for their customers and constituents,” said Lighting Science Chief Executive Officer Ed Bednarcik.

Lighting Science is a global leader in innovative LED lighting solutions. The company’s biological lighting technology was originally developed for NASA to help astronauts sleep in space, and has evolved into a full line of dynamic circadian lighting that has the power to make you more alert and productive during the day, and help you sleep better at night. These applications have been formatted for residential lighting, as well as commercial environments in schools, healthcare facilities, offices, and roadways.

“Rhode Island has a talented pipeline of workers from our outstanding colleges and universities, a great location between New York and Boston, and an Administration laser-focused on making easier and less expensive to do business,” said Raimondo. “I am thrilled to see Lighting Science Group recognizing all our state has to offer, moving here, innovating here, and creating jobs. We will continue to build upon our economic development strategy to encourage even more businesses to join them in expanding and growing in the Ocean State.”

The company’s executive leadership will join Bednarcik in West Warwick, RI, including Executive Vice President of Business Development Pete Rumsey, Executive Vice President and General Counsel Philip Ragona, Senior Director of Commercial Sales Dan Yasi, Senior Director of Product Management Jeff Campbell, and others. The company’s Research & Development team, headed up by Founder and Chief Technology Officer Fred Maxik, along with several other administrative and back office functions, will remain in Florida close to its technology roots at NASA. The company expects to significantly increase its Rhode Island team in 2016, and continue to expand rapidly into 2017 as the market for its innovative lighting solutions grows.

It is Lighting Science’s mission to reinvent light as we know it into a tool of physical and emotional wellness. Utilizing the incredible resources found in Rhode Island, Lighting Science will continue to bring its award winning, patented technology to the market to help people benefit from safer streets, smarter classrooms, healthy patient care, productive offices, and restful homes.
