The Coral Reef Breakthrough

Three of the world's leading organizations dedicated to ocean conservation have joined forces in an effort to protect coral reefs and coastal ecosystems around the world. The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), a network including 45 countries who represent over 75% of the world’s coral reefs, has launched the Coral Reef Breakthrough in partnership with the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) and the UN High-Level Climate Champions.  The Coral Reef Breakthrough is vital to preventing the functional extinction of coral reefs by securing the future of at least 125,000 km2 of shallow-water tropical coral reefs.

Actions to achieve the vision of the Coral Reef Breakthrough are orientated around:

  1. Stopping drivers of loss
  2. Doubling the area of coral reefs under effective protection
  3. Accelerating restoration.
  4. Secure investments of at least USD 12 billion by 2030.

This initiative is not just about protecting marine ecosystems; it’s about bolstering the resilience of over half a billion people worldwide by 2030.
